The Pico 4S will use the same chipset as the Quest 3 with more RAM
A public benchmark CPU score suggests that the Pico 4S will have the same chip as the Meta Quest 3, but paired with more RAM.
The Geekbench score, brought to our attention by VR enthusiast Luna, shows a coded Pico A9210 headset with two 2.05GHz cores and four 2.36GHz cores. This is exactly what appears for the Quest 3 on Geekbench as well.
The results are also very similar between the headsets, with the Quest 3 having 20% higher single-core performance and 5% higher multi-core performance. This won’t necessarily be the case for the device itself though, as running side-loaded 2D Android apps to evaluate a standalone headset isn’t a reliable technique. When running a 2D application in home space, the operating system will rarely set the CPU clock speed close to its maximum, and the home space and interface itself use some performance.
While the Quest 3 has a unified 8GB of RAM, the Pico A9210 is listed at 12GB. This would make it superior to Quest 3 for multitasking on the device and potentially allow developers to use higher resolution textures and more detail.
ByteDance-owned Pico has yet to announce a successor to the Pico 4, but it did trademark the “Pico 4S” back in March.
Ringless “4S” controller icons were also found in the Pico Connect PC VR streaming software. In September, images surfaced on Chinese social media showing ringless Pico controllers that appear to have the same design as the icons found in the software.
The Information reported in December that the Pico 5 was canceled because sales of the Pico 4 “fell far short of ByteDance’s expectations.” The same report said that ByteDance plans to release a refreshed version of Pico 4, but did not provide any details on what changes it will bring.
The Geekbench score suggests the Pico 4S will include an upgrade to the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip used in the Quest 3, and previous findings suggest it will include ringless controllers.
As for the other changes that the Pico 4S will have, it will depend on ByteDance’s priorities. As it was reportedly disappointed with sales of the Pico 4, it may want to cut costs to compete with the upcoming Quest 3S. Alternatively, it may want to focus on convincing existing Pico 4 owners to upgrade. We’ll be watching closely for any further Pico 4S leaks or announcements.
